Blessed is the man whose trust is in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him.” Jeremiah 17:7 This scripture was truly reflected in the life of Deacon Michael Settler. It was evident in the way he cherished his family, covering them in prayer and guiding them with wisdom. It was evident in the way he served his church with humility, never seeking recognition, but only desiring to honor his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It was evident in the way he uplifted others, bringing hope in times of heaviness and light in moments of darkness. Though he now rests in the loving arms of the Savior he faithfully served, his legacy remains enduring and sacred. Michael John Settler, lovingly known as “Uncle Ironhead,” “Woodville,” “Unc,” and most affectionately “Papa,” was born on June 14, 1955, in Woodville to the proud parents Arthur and Mable Settler. As the fifth of ten children, Michael was raised with the values of faith, hard work, love, and resilience, qualities that would define the man he became and the legacy he leaves behind. Michael received his education through the Woodville public school system, where his humble beginnings shaped the strong, dependable, and hardworking spirit that so many came to respect and admire. A true country boy at heart, Michael carried his roots proudly throughout his life. Whether he was fishing by the water, tending to his flourishing garden, building with his hands, barbecuing for family and friends, or relaxing while watching his favorite sci-fi shows, he found joy in life’s simple blessings. Known for his “green thumb,” Michael could grow just about anything, and he took pride in sharing the fruits and vegetables from his garden with those he loved. He was also known for his adventurous taste buds, often inviting others to try his favorite delicacies like “coon” and pig feet, always with a laugh and a smile. In 1978, Michael met the love of his life, Gwendolyn Temple. Their love story blossomed into a beautiful union when they were married on November 12, 1979. Their covenant before God became a shining example of enduring love, faithfulness, and commitment that spanned 47 wonderful years. Together, they built a strong and loving family foundation that blessed two generations. Michael was a devoted husband, a loving and dutiful father, and a proud grandfather whose grandchildren lovingly knew him as “Papa.” His presence brought strength, wisdom, humor, and unconditional love to his family. Michael believed deeply in the value of hard work and service. He began his professional career as a Maintenance Supervisor at Parkland Apartments and Moody Compress before continuing his work with the Galveston County Parks Department. Eventually, he found his lasting professional home at College of the Mainland, where he dedicated 25 years of service overseeing the grounds and maintenance division. His tireless work ethic, leadership, and commitment earned the respect and admiration of all who worked alongside him. Though he retired in 2012, retirement did not slow him down. Michael remained active, always finding purpose in caring for his home, family, garden, and community. Above all else, Michael was a man of steadfast faith. In 1993, he joined Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor George W. Singleton Jr. There, he faithfully served in various ministries, committing his life to the work of the Lord and the uplifting of others. Through his steadfast devotion and servant’s heart, Michael was later ordained as a Deacon. For 33 years, Deacon Michael Settler served devoutly at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church until God called him home. His life was a testimony of humility, compassion, dedication, and faithfulness to God’s people. Deacon Michael Settler leaves us with one of his favorite Bible verses that states, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding; in all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5–6 continues to guide us on this journey of life. Deacon Michael John Settler transitioned from his earthly life on May 4, 2026, to receive his eternal life’s reward. He is preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Mable Settler; his siblings, Ella Mae Areline, James Earl Mitchell, Joe Lewis Settler, and Mabellean Settler; and other loved ones. He leaves to cherish his memories, his devoted wife of 47 years, Gwendolyn Settler; his sons, Daryl Temple (Jacinta) and Michael Settler (Ermanique); his grandchildren, Damiya Temple, Martin Davis-Wheatfall, Jace Urps, Daryl Temple Jr., Brianne Settler, and Emersyn Settler; his siblings, Lottie Mae Areline, Shirley Ann Jackson (Luther), Patricia Ann Settler, Willie George Settler, and Leonard Settler; dear friends, Linda and Obie Johnson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, his Fellowship Church Family, and friends. Deacon Michael Settler leaves behind a legacy rooted in faith, family, hard work, and love. He touched countless lives through his kindness, insight, laughter, and servant’s heart. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His life reminds us that true greatness is found not in riches or recognition, but in how faithfully one loves God, serves others, and cherishes family.
