Geneva Elaine Burke, lovingly known as “Sweets,” was born in Brenham, Texas, and later made her home in the La Marque–Texas City area, where she built a life centered on faith, family, friendship, and service to others. Geneva was the beloved daughter of Dorothy Dotson (Pennie) and John Tyler Dotson, Jr., both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Hilmon Odoms, and her cherished best friend, Evelyn Williams. At an early age, Geneva accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at Greater Macedonia Baptist Church in Texas City, Texas. Her faith remained an important part of her life and helped guide her through life’s many seasons. A proud graduate of Lincoln High School, Class of 1966, Geneva continued her education at College of the Mainland, where she earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree in General Business. Her dedication and strong work ethic led her to a remarkable career with American National Insurance Company (ANICO), where she faithfully served for 40 years as an Assistant Analysis Clerk before retiring. Geneva was a woman whose warmth and kindness touched everyone she met. Affectionately known as “Sweets,” she had a passion for cooking and baking and found great joy in bringing family together around the table. Family gatherings were among her favorite occasions, where her laughter, stories, and loving spirit created treasured memories for those she loved. She enjoyed crocheting, playing dominoes, and sharing laughter with family and friends. Geneva possessed a gentle, generous heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Her sweet disposition, compassionate nature, and unwavering love for her family will be remembered forever. Geneva leaves to cherish her precious memories her son, Landis Odoms; and her daughter, Dorlana Ruth Burke Joe (James III). She also leaves her beloved grandson and best friend, Daylon Ross, and her cherished grand dog, Gravy. She is also survived by her loving siblings: Barbara Dotson Powers, Wanda Scarlett-Bass (Al), Johnetta Dotson Thomas, Charlynn Hudson, Duncan Dotson (Dolores), and Tyronda Calvin (Mitchell). Geneva shared a special lifelong bond with her childhood friend, Doris Williams Turner, and leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will miss her deeply. Though our hearts are saddened by her passing, we find comfort in knowing that Geneva’s legacy of love, kindness, generosity, and devotion to family will live on through all who were blessed to know her. “Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and her love will remain in our hearts forever.”
