Reflections of a Beautiful Life Helen M. Allums, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, was born to Robert Lee Allums and Ella Mae Freeman Allums on July 9, 1951 in Navasota, Texas. Helen received her formal education in the public schools of La Marque, Texas and was a 1969 graduate of Lincoln High School. At an early age, she united with Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church in Texas City under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. D. N. Benford, Sr., and was baptized. Even though her health prevented her from attending Sunday services, she supported her church and remained a loyal member until her passing. Helen was employed with Fairfield Inn as a Night Auditor until her retirement. In her leisure time, she loved spending time with her family, going to the game rooms, and watching her soap operas and game shows, especially The Young and The Restless and Wheel of Fortune. After a fruitful life of 72 years, Helen entered her eternal rest on April 18, 2024 in Texas City. Upon her heavenly arrival, she was reunited with her father, Robert Lee Allums, mother and step-father, Ella Mae and Clint Cartwright; former husband and companion, Douglas Hobgood, Sr.; sister, Mildred Allums Patterson; brother, Eddie Lee Elam. Sr.; step-brother, Verdell Cartwright; daughter-in-law, Charmell Williams Hobgood; niece, Keyonna Allums Newsome; and nephews, Peter Elam, Jr. and Roshone Elam. Left to cherish memories of her life are her devoted children, Reneta Hobgood and Douglas Wayne Hobgood, Jr.; grandchildren, Bre’a (Brittany) Roberson, Trenton Coleman, Jermelle (Brandi) Hobgood and a special blessing, a baby girl to make her arrival in September 2024; great-grandchildren, Britton Roberson and Journey Jefferson; her sisters and brother: Brenda Allums Preston, Bonita Allums Ellison (Charles), Peter James Elam Jr. and Tera Lee Cartwright Hoosier; god-daughter, Montrece Elam; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Littone Elam; brother-in-law, Billy Joe Patterson; aunts, Beatrice Lee (Lester), Rosie Lee Porter, Joann Godspeed and Dinah Freeman; and a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
