On a beautiful bright and sunny day, Mildred Lucille McCoy was born to Nelson and Marguerite Gant McCoy, on July 6, 1932. “Mil” as she was affectionately called, accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at an early age. She attended Charlton-Pollard High School in Beaumont, Texas. She later moved to Galveston with her parents and attended Old Central High School. Mil had a heart for God's people which is evidenced by her choice of employment. Mil was employed in the neo natal unit at John Sealy Hospital. She loved and showered the babies with care, love, and devotion. She worked at St Vincent's House and embraced the vision becoming an agent of hope and transforming the lives of individuals and family. Mil worked as a secretary to the Director of St. Vincents House. The organization provided food, an emergency assistance program, counseling, clinical and dental services. Mil was devoted to serving St. Vincent’s clients. She was subsequently employed at Catholic Charities, an organization guided by God’s love. She later worked at St. John's School as a teacher's assistant and loved working with the children, and they loved her. Mildred was a member of Bible Days Revival Church Inc. for over 50 years. She studied and learned under the teachings and leadership of Apostle E. W. Wilcots. She was licensed by Apostle E. W. Wilcots as an Evangelist during an era when women were not permitted to preach. Evangelist Braziel began to teach and evangelize in the church and community. She served on the pastoral committee and taught Sunday School at Bible Days Church. She absolutely loved traveling with the Apostle and the church during the Women’s Convention every August. She was a fashion icon/fashionista and loved beautiful clothes, shoes and accessories. Mils favorite past time was spending time with her eleven children and family. She also enjoyed spending time with her friends dining, socializing, traveling, attending banquets, and church events. The large family gatherings delighted her, and she loved all her children unconditionally. Her children dubbed her "The Queen.” Mil especially looked forward to her birthday parties, and the special attention from her family. She was not shy with her gift list. She made sure each of her children had a gift list from her. Mil was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Nelson and Marguerite McCoy; her daughter, Linda Holt-Willis; son, Robert Otems, Jr.; brother, Nelson McCoy, Jr.; half-sister, Evangelist Rose McCoy-Monroe and her grandsons, Trevor Otems, Brock Green, and Kevin Gamble. She leaves to cherish her memories: children, Margaret Holt-Flint (Donald), Sharon Holt-Williams, Rosalind "Akua” Holt, La Shaun Otems-Fontenot (JD), Cynthia Braziel-Greely (Ron), Troy Otems, Kevin Otems, Quentin Otems, Gerald Otems (Tonya); nieces, Deborah Simpson (Robert), Lois Booker (Otis); nephew, Nelson McCoy Jr., (Mary); aunt, Mamie Etta McDonald; twenty-two grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, cousins, including special friends, Connie Anderson, Helen Crooks and Eleanor Babineaux. Mildred was a beautiful woman of God. Her love, kindness, strength, and faith touched all who knew her. God called her Home on June 8, 2025, to live with the Lord. She is beloved, and will be forever missed by her family, friends, and community.
