Reflections of A Christian’s Journey On December 25, 1944, a precious gift was bestowed upon Dick Glenn and Mattie Lou Shields Glenn in Birmingham, Alabama, as they welcomed their first child, William Erskin Glenn, into the world. This handsome baby boy was the beginning of a beautiful legacy, as he grew to become a shining example of faith, resilience, and dedication. Erskin, as he was affectionately known, spent his formative years in Texas, where he graduated from Lorraine Crosby High School and later attended Prairie View University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education. He also received a Certificate in Dry Cleaning and Pressing, demonstrating his versatility and determination to succeed. Erskin's life journey was a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to his community. As a preteen, he joined and was baptized at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Hitchcock. After the passing of his father, he and his family continued their Christian journey at Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church, under the guidance of the late Rev. Wilbur Johnson. Erskin continued to humbly serve his church under the leadership of the present pastor, Dr. William L. Randall, Jr. as a Deacon, member of the Brotherhood, Sunday School, and had worked with Vacation Bible School, always ensuring his presence was felt even during his health struggles. Erskin united in marriage to Linda Charlotte Smith on November 22, 1975. This union was blessed with three sons. Despite his health challenges, Erskin's spirit never wavered. He continued to attend church services regularly, finding comfort and strength in his faith. Determined to attend church service, he sometimes worshipped with New Macedonia Baptist Church, which was closer to his home and allowed him to ride his chair to church. Erskin's unshakable optimism and faith inspired all those around him, and his legacy will continue to uplift and motivate those who knew him. On Monday, August 12, 2024, God came and gave him eternal rest. Those awaiting his heavenly arrival are his parents, Dick and Mattie Glenn; brother, Donald Glenn; wife, Linda Glenn; brother-in-law, John Spells and other loved ones. Left to celebrate his legacy are his sons, William E. Glenn, Jr. and wife, April, Jonah Glenn, Sr. and wife, Shemika and James Glenn; his devoted sisters, Eleanor Spells and Patty McNeal and husband, Calvin; 8 grandchildren; his in-laws, Melba Smith, Elvarena Loville, James Melvin Smith and Frederick Lee Smith; nieces, nephews, and a host of family members, friends and his Greater St. Matthews Church Family.
