Hardworking, strong willed, practical, and confident are characteristics of our beloved John Lee Freeman. With the dawning of a new day, December 10, 1940, a unique gift in the form of a baby boy was given to Pearl Elias Freeman and Edward Freeman in Frierson, Louisiana (near Shreveport). He was born into a large family circle of love. His mother ensured that he was reared to love the Lord. He made his confession of faith and accepted Jesus as his personal Saviour being baptized at his family’s church Progressive Missionary Baptist Church while he was still youthful. That same faith carried him through disappointments, heartache, grief, and sickness. John was a product of the La Marque Public School System. He was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School, Class of 1961. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army giving courageous service from 1961 until 1964 when he was honorably discharged. John returned home and united with Mt. Paran Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Johnson, he continued to service under the Rev. Dr. W. W. Jackson, Jr., because of his commitment to Christ and his faithful service at church he became a deacon. He served until his health prevented him from attending church. On July 25, 1964, John embarked on a new chapter in his life. He was united in Holy Matrimony to Shirley Ann Loud. This union would be blessed with two amazing children, Charndra, and John Jr. He felt no matter what he accomplished in life, nothing would exceed his greatest roles as a husband, father, and grandfather. While in the Army, and after attending College of the Mainland, he was able to equip himself with the necessary tools to enter the work arena. John’s professional career spanned through various jobs where he gave valuable service as he expanded his work ethic. His final career assignment would be where devoted over a quarter of a century of diligent service to Monsanto Chemical Plant, retiring in 1996. John was a long-time member and past Treasurer of LaMarque Masonic Lodge #373. He fulfilled their motto and principals daily, making Good Men Better through strong character and service to others. He showed himself to be one that possessed those qualities daily. John enjoyed doing odd jobs for his family and friends, but his main joy was playing dominoes at the Domino Shack in Texas City. (according to John, he was the best) His characteristics as described above exemplified who he was as a man. John touched many lives during eighty-two years on earth. He was an unassuming husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. Although he will no longer dwell with us in body, his memories shall abide with us forever. On May 21, 2023, John Lee Freeman transitioned from his earthly life to receive his eternal life’s reward. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pearl and Edward Freeman, son, John Freeman Jr.; his oldest grandson, Quincy M. Jones (Que), his siblings, Odell, Edward, Herman, James, Joseph, Gloria Jean, Xavier, Edgar Sanders, Brenda Freeman, and other loved ones. His loving memory will live on in the hearts of his beloved family, his wife of 58 years, Shirley Freeman; his daughter and son-in-law, Charndra and Norman Jones; his grandson, Jalen Jones; his sisters, Ida Mae Spells, Linda Freeman, and Bridgette Freeman; his God children, Victoria Long, and Jason Hawkins; his nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
