Martha Jones

Martha Jones’ life was a testament to faith and love, born September 13, 1940, in Galveston, Texas, to Garon Ravnell and Mae Birdex was born in Galveston Texas on September 13th 1940. Educated in the public schools of Galveston, Texas, she was a 1958 graduate of Central High School. After graduation, she pursued a degree to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse. Martha dedicated her life to Christ, uniting with Live Oak Baptist Church in Galveston and in the late 1960’s, she continued her Christian journey uniting with Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church in Hitchcock under the late Rev. John Carlton Allen. She has remained faithful to her church, serving under the previous pastors and the current pastor, Dr. William L. Randall, Jr. Through the years she has served in various ministries of the church including the Bereavement Ministry, the Seasoned Saints, the Mission, and the Assistance Ministry. In 1970, the family moved to Texas City. Martha’s work career extended through UTMB (John Sealy) Hospital, Galveston, Galveston County Memorial Hospital, Texas City and culminated at Shriners hospital in Galveston are worked until her retirement. With a heart full of love, she enjoyed cooking, but baking was her true delight, sharing sweet treats with friends, family, and the church. Summer meant her homemade cookies for Vacation Bible School and cakes for special events. Her love for the Lord shone bright, touching hearts with humility. She’d call to say “Hi, I’m just thinking about you Baby!” She was a woman who passionately loved the Lord with a kind and humble spirit. She would make calls to those she held dear to her heart just to say, “Hi, I was just thinking about you baby.” She not only had profound love for her family, but she cherished everyone that she came in contact with. Friday November 8, 2024, marked a glorious moment as Martha heard Jesus’ gentle whisper inviting her to surrender and find refuge in Him, and she softly slipped away to eternal rest. She is preceded in death by her father, Garon Ravnell; mother, Mae Daniels; brother, Charles Ravnell; son-in-law, Kenneth Lavallies, and grandson, Quincy Jones. Left to celebrate the cherished memories of her life are her devoted children: daughter, Cheryl Lavallies; son, Norman B. Jones, Jr. and wife, Charndra Jones; grandsons, Aaron Jones and Jalen Jones; adopted daughter, Catherine Adams; adopted grandson, Christopher Adams and wife, Shyundria Adams; a special friend, Beverly Ferguson; and a host of beloved friends, family and her Greater St. Matthews Church Family.
